What Is the Power Hour?

The power hour is the final hour of the trading session — roughly 3:00–4:00 PM ET for U.S. markets — when volume and volatility often surge as traders position into the close. For day traders, it can be one of the most active windows of the day.

Why it's active

Big players adjust positions before the close, and the day's story often resolves. That concentrated activity can produce strong, clean moves — but also fast, choppy ones. High participation means better liquidity but also quick reversals.

Trading the power hour

The extra movement is opportunity if you respect the speed. Keep size sensible, use a firm stop, and don't chase — late-day moves can reverse hard. It pairs with knowing the best times to trade.

A note for futures traders

Futures trade nearly 24 hours, so the most-watched windows are the market opens and this late-session hour. The open (9:30 ET) and the power hour bookend the highest-activity parts of the U.S. cash session.

FAQ

What time is the power hour?

For U.S. markets it's roughly 3:00-4:00 PM ET — the last hour before the cash close, when volume and volatility often spike.

Is the power hour good for day trading?

It can be, thanks to strong moves and liquidity. But it's fast and prone to reversals, so manage size and risk carefully rather than chasing.
