What Is Change of Character (CHoCH)?

A change of character (CHoCH) is the first time price breaks structure against the prevailing trend — for example, an uptrend suddenly breaking its most recent higher low. It's the earliest structural hint that momentum may be shifting and a reversal could be starting.

How to spot a CHoCH

  • In an uptrend, a break below the last higher low = bearish CHoCH.
  • In a downtrend, a break above the last lower high = bullish CHoCH.
  • It often follows a liquidity sweep of the highs or lows.

How traders use it

A CHoCH is an early warning, not a full confirmation. Many traders wait for a CHoCH, then look for a lower-timeframe entry (an FVG or order block) in the new direction, targeting the opposite liquidity.

FAQ

Is CHoCH a reversal signal?

It's the first sign of a possible reversal, not a guarantee. Combine it with a liquidity sweep and confirmation before trading against the old trend.

Does CHoCH work on futures?

Yes — it's just market structure, so it applies to NQ, ES and any liquid market.
